Instructions/Setup:
The exercise begins with two attackers working unopposed to execute short combination plays around the edge of the penalty area, leading to two separate finishing attempts on goal. The focus during this phase is on timing, movement, and clinical execution in front of goal.
Immediately after both finishing attempts, the two attackers must quickly transition into defenders as they are challenged by a wave of three new attackers in a 3v2 scenario. This phase emphasizes defensive organization under pressure, recovery runs, and communication.
Coaching Notes:
• Encourage quick, sharp passing and creative movement during the unopposed finishing phase.
• In the 3v2 transition, highlight defensive principles such as delaying, pressing triggers, and covering space effectively.
• Rotate players frequently to ensure everyone experiences multiple repetitions both as attackers and defenders. This promotes well-rounded development and keeps intensity high throughout the session.
Progression 1: Add Passive Defenders in the Finishing Phase:
Introduce one or two passive defenders in the initial combination/finishing phase.
Their job is to provide light pressure and take away space without actively winning the ball.
Focus: Helps attackers improve scanning, decision-making, and quality of execution under mild pressure.
Progression 2: Add a Target Goal or Counter Option for Defenders:
Give the two defenders a small target goal or a counter line they can break after winning the ball.
If they intercept or regain possession, they must try to counter quickly and score/pass into the target.
Focus: Transition from defense to attack, encouraging game-realistic behavior.
