Practice Breakdown:

Number of Players: 14 | Pitch size: 40x36

  • This small sided game begins with a 6v6+2 setup where teams play horizontally across the pitch, attacking two mini goals on either end. The two goalkeepers act as neutral players, supporting the team in possession to build and maintain control.

Once a team scores in either of the mini goals, the coach immediately feeds a new ball vertically into the pitch to a player from the scoring team. All players must then transition and switch direction, now attacking and defending vertically, creating a dynamic two-phase game that mimics real-time transitions and encourages adaptability, organization, and quick thinking.

  • • Neutral Player Use: Encourage the team in possession to utilize goalkeepers as bounce options to maintain width and recycle possession when under pressure.

    • Speed of Transition: Once a goal is scored, all players must immediately react, shifting shape and roles to prepare for the second phase of play.

    • Positional Awareness: Defenders should maintain compactness and communication during the switch to prevent overloads and disorganization.

    • Decision-Making Under Pressure: Players must make fast decisions in both attack and defense during transitional moments, replicating the intensity of match scenarios.

  • Limit Attacking Touches:

Limit the number of touches for the attacking players (e.g., no more than two touches per player). This encourages quicker, more efficient ball movement and decision-making.

Focus: Increases tempo and improves the attackers' ability to control the ball under pressure while making rapid decisions in tight spaces.
