Instructions/Setup:

This pre-season practice takes place in a 20x20-yard area and focuses on developing possession, speed, and defending. The area is split into 4 equal zones, with 4 players starting in each. Additionally, 4 players start outside the area. They will sprint around three poles before joining a zone, aiming to win the ball in a 4v1 rondo (1 or 2 touches depending on the level).

If the defender wins possession or the ball goes out of play, the player who lost possession will sprint around the poles and tap in a teammate to join the rondo. The practice is performed at high intensity, ensuring players maintain a quick tempo, before allowing for a brief recovery period.

Coaching Notes:

• Quick transition from offense to defense – When possession is lost, the player must quickly transition to defensive mode. Encourage them to sprint to the poles and rejoin the rondo with intensity. This reinforces the importance of quick transitions.

• Pressure and support in the rondo – The 4 attacking players should focus on quick, sharp passes with one or two touches, while the defender must apply constant pressure. Emphasize maintaining possession under pressure and creating passing angles to help keep the ball moving.

• High work rate and intensity – Ensure players are sprinting between the poles with maximum effort to simulate match intensity. This develops their speed and stamina while also improving their reaction time when transitioning into the rondo.

• Focus on ball control and passing accuracy – Attackers must maintain control and precision when passing under pressure. Encourage them to stay calm and composed, even when pressed by the defender.

Progression 1: Add a Second Defender

Introduce a second defender into the rondo, making it a 4v2. This will force the attacking players to work harder on creating space and moving the ball faster to retain possession.

Focus: Improve decision-making under pressure and develop the ability to create space quickly when under increased defensive pressure.

Progression 2: Limited Touches

Limit the number of touches per player to 1 or 2 touches. This progression will force players to make quicker decisions and increase the speed of play.

Focus: Enhance passing speed, decision-making, and ability to maintain possession under time pressure.
