Instructions/Setup:
This practice takes place in a 25 by 25-yard area and focuses on developing pressing to win possession in 2v2 scenarios. We set up by splitting the area into four zones, placing mini goals in each corner of the area, and creating a smaller central zone. Two players from the possession team will start in each square of the larger zone, while two defending players will start in the four smaller central zones.
To begin, two players will start with the ball, triggering the two defending players closest to them (blue) to press and win possession. The possession team must make two passes before being able to switch zones, with the next two defenders pressing as soon as the player receives possession. If the defenders win possession, they must finish in the mini goal. If the possession team switches the ball into all four zones, they are awarded a goal.
Coaching Notes:
• Pressing coordination – Defenders should work together to press the ball effectively, closing down passing lanes and forcing the attacking players into mistakes. Focus on working as a unit.
• Passing accuracy and movement – The possession team must work on accurate passing and quick movement to switch zones and avoid pressure. Encourage sharp, quick passes and runs to create space.
• Defensive awareness – Defenders should be aware of their positioning, ensuring they are covering the passing lanes while staying compact to reduce the attacking team’s options.
• Transition play – When possession is won, defenders should transition quickly into attack, looking to score in the mini goals. Encourage quick decision-making after gaining possession.
Progression 1: Add a Time Limit
Introduce a time limit for the possession team to switch the ball through all four zones. If they fail to do so in the allotted time, they lose possession, and the defenders are awarded a goal.
Focus: Improve passing speed and decision-making under time pressure.
Progression 2: Add a Third Defender
Introduce a third defender, making it a 2v3 situation for the possession team. This forces the attackers to make quicker decisions and work harder to maintain possession.
Focus: Develop quick decision-making under pressure and the ability to maintain possession with fewer players.
