Instructions/Setup:

This small-sided game takes place in a 25 by 45-yard area and focuses on developing possession penetration and switching the point of the attack. The area is divided into two halves, with an end zone at each end, and teams set up with attackers, midfielders, and defenders.

The objective is for the central players to complete 4 passes before being allowed to play a penetrating pass into the end zone for the strikers to finish. Once the pass is made into the end zone, the defender in the zone becomes active, applying pressure to win possession and disrupt the attacking play.

Players must focus on maintaining possession, making accurate passes, and switching the point of attack to create openings for a penetrating pass into the end zone.

Coaching Notes:

• Possession and passing accuracy – Focus on maintaining good possession and playing accurate passes in the central area. Players should aim to complete 4 quality passes before transitioning to the final pass into the end zone.

• Switching the point of attack – Encourage players to switch the point of attack regularly by using quick, decisive passes to move the ball across the field. This will help stretch the defense and create space for penetration.

• Penetrating the defense – When making the penetrating pass into the end zone, players should aim to break the defensive lines and provide an opportunity for the striker to get a shot on goal. The pass should be weighted well enough for the striker to make a quick run.

• Defending the end zone – Defenders in the end zone should focus on reading the play, anticipating passes, and applying pressure as soon as the ball enters the zone. They should look to intercept the ball and prevent the attacker from getting a shot on goal.

Progression 1: Increase the Number of Passes Before Penetration

Increase the number of passes required in the central area before a penetrating pass can be made into the end zone (e.g., 6 or 8 passes). This progression forces the team to maintain possession for longer, improving their ability to work the ball and create space.

Focus: Develop the players' patience and ability to build up play before transitioning into a final penetrating pass.

Progression 2: Add a Second Defender in the End Zone

Introduce a second defender into the end zone, making it more difficult for the attacking team to penetrate. This forces the attackers to make quicker decisions and combine more effectively to create space.

Focus: Improve attacking players' ability to combine and create space in tight situations while under increased defensive pressure.
