Instructions/Setup:
This technical passing practice focuses on developing a central player's ability to turn out of pressure and switch the play effectively. The practice takes place in a 20 x 20-yard area with four players, two on the outside and two in the central area. The central players will receive passes under pressure and need to turn with the ball, positioning their body to open up and switch the play to the opposite side.
The practice begins with the ball played into one of the central players. The player must then take a touch, turn their body to face the opposite direction, and switch the ball to the other side of the field. After the pass is made, the central player moves into the space created by the switch and receives the ball back from the outside players, continuing the flow of play.
Coaching Notes:
• Body positioning – Ensure the central players position themselves with an open body shape to receive the ball, allowing them to scan the field and make quick decisions to turn and switch play efficiently.
• Quick turns – Players should focus on using quick, sharp turns to shift direction and evade pressure. Encourage the use of both feet for turning, helping players become more comfortable under different situations.
• Vision and awareness – Encourage players to constantly scan the field before receiving the ball, looking for space and potential passing options. This will help them make more informed decisions when turning out of pressure.
• Weight and accuracy of passes – Ensure that players focus on the weight and accuracy of their passes, especially when switching the play. The pass should be firm, precise, and well-timed to keep the ball moving smoothly.
Progression 1: Add Defensive Pressure
Introduce one or two defenders who apply pressure to the central player, forcing them to turn quickly and make the switch under pressure. This progression encourages players to perform the task under more realistic match conditions.
Focus: Improve turning ability under pressure, quick decision-making, and maintaining composure when switching play.
Progression 2: Introduce a 2v2 Situation
Increase the intensity by making it a 2v2 situation in the central area, where players need to combine and switch the play while keeping possession. The addition of defenders forces the central players to use their turns and body shape to keep possession and maintain an effective attacking shape.
Focus: Enhance teamwork, decision-making, and adaptability in tight spaces while maintaining possession and switching the play effectively.
