Instructions/Setup:
This warm-up takes place in a 20 by 20-yard area and is used to activate players’ dribbling and passing for the upcoming session. We set up by splitting players into groups of three, with each group starting on an outside cone. Four cones are used to create the central square.
To begin, four players will dribble forward and leave their ball at the cone on their right. They will then run anticlockwise around the square to collect the next ball, which they will pass back to the next player in line. This sequence continues until players are comfortable enough to introduce the progression.
Coaching Notes:
• Focus on ball control – Encourage players to maintain close control of the ball while dribbling, ensuring they are comfortable with all surfaces of their feet.
• Passing accuracy – The players passing the ball must focus on accuracy, making sure to deliver the ball to the next player at the correct distance and pace.
• Quick transitions – After leaving the ball at the cone, players should quickly transition into their next movement. Emphasize the importance of quick footwork and reactions.
• Awareness and positioning – Players should be aware of their surroundings, ensuring they are ready to collect the next ball and quickly adjust their positioning.
Progression 1: Increase Dribbling Intensity
Increase the intensity by having players dribble with a faster pace, incorporating more dynamic movements such as feints or changes of direction.
Focus: Improve dribbling under pressure and increase pace, while maintaining control of the ball.
Progression 2: Add a Defender
Introduce a defender who will pressure the players as they dribble and pass. The defender’s role is to make the attacking players work harder on their ball control and decision-making.
Focus: Improve dribbling under pressure and passing accuracy while dealing with defensive pressure.
