Instructions/Setup:
This double 4v2 rondo focuses on developing possession play while incorporating quick transitions and teamwork. The practice requires players to maintain possession on both sides of the grid, while also working on their movement and awareness as they switch from one side to the other.
The emphasis is on keeping the ball moving quickly, maintaining team shape, and transitioning smoothly between offensive and defensive roles.
Coaching Notes:
• Possession Play on Both Sides: The practice starts with 4 players on each side of the grid, working as a possession team against 2 defenders in the middle. The players on the sides should focus on quick, short passes, maintaining good ball movement, and supporting each other with constant off-the-ball movement.
• Quick Transitions: Once the ball is transferred across the grid, the players on the side where the ball is played must immediately sprint to the opposite side, forming a new team of 4. This transition simulates the fast changes in possession and requires players to be constantly on their toes, ready to shift from offense to defense.
• Defenders’ Role: The 2 defenders in the middle should work on positioning, closing passing lanes, and attempting to intercept the ball. Encourage them to apply pressure without diving in, focusing on forcing the attackers into less favorable positions.
• Player Movement: As the ball moves across the grid, players should focus on making supporting runs to create passing lanes. Off-the-ball movement is critical in maintaining possession, so players should always be looking for opportunities to offer options for the passer.
• Transition Speed: The speed at which the side players transition into the opposite grid is crucial. This helps the players develop the ability to move quickly in a game scenario, reacting to turnovers and regaining possession in a new part of the field.
Progression 1: Add a Third Defender:
Introduce a third defender to increase the pressure on the possession team. This will challenge the attacking players to work even harder to maintain possession and execute quick passes to evade the extra defender.
Focus: Enhances decision-making under pressure and the ability to maintain possession against a numerical disadvantage.
Progression 2: Reduce Time Per Touch:
To increase the intensity, impose a time limit on each player’s touch (e.g., 2 or 3 seconds). This forces players to make quicker decisions and play at a faster tempo, improving their speed of thought and reaction.
Focus: Improves quick decision-making and ball movement in high-pressure situations.
