Instructions/Setup:
This practice takes place in a 15 by 20-yard area and focuses on developing technical passing combinations in a 4-3-3 formation. Players are divided into the appropriate positions of the formation, with two wide players, a central striker, three midfielders, and four defenders. The objective is to work on combining quickly and accurately within the given space to create attacking opportunities.
The focus of this drill is on receiving and passing under pressure, with an emphasis on sharp passing combinations to break down defensive lines. Players should rotate through the drill to ensure all positions are covered and maintain fluidity within the formation. The combination play should involve quick passes, one-touch football where possible, and strategic movement to create space and opportunities for others.
Coaching Notes:
• Open body shape to receive passes – Players should focus on maintaining an open body shape when receiving the ball. This positioning makes it easier to turn and play forward, facilitating faster transitions and better control.
• Passing weight and accuracy – Precision in passing is crucial, especially when linking up in a tight space. Players should focus on the weight and accuracy of their passes, ensuring the ball arrives at the right pace and place for the next player to receive it cleanly.
• One-touch passing where possible – Encourage players to use one-touch passing when available, as it speeds up play and allows for a quicker flow of combinations. This requires good vision and anticipation to execute effectively.
• Double movement to receive the ball – Players should make a double movement (e.g., fake one way and then go the other) to confuse defenders and create space. This movement is key for getting into the right positions to receive passes.
• Communication when passing and receiving – Players should maintain constant verbal and non-verbal communication. Calling for the ball, signaling runs, and providing feedback enhances the fluidity of the drill and ensures successful combinations.
• Accuracy over power when finishing – When the ball is played into the final third or for finishing, players should prioritize accuracy over power. A well-placed shot or pass is more effective than trying to strike the ball too hard, especially under pressure.
• Alternate between left and right foot – Players should work on using both feet when passing and receiving. This helps develop more rounded technical ability and ensures that players can play comfortably in all situations.
Progression 1: Add Defenders in Midfield
Introduce a defender in the midfield to apply pressure on the central players. The attacking team must now adjust their passing and movement to break the pressure from the defender while maintaining fluidity in their combinations.
Focus: Improve decision-making under pressure and enhance the ability to execute passing combinations while being closed down by a defender.
Progression 2: Limit Touches
Limit the number of touches allowed for each player (e.g., two touches per player). This increases the tempo of the drill, encouraging faster passing and movement, and forcing players to make quicker decisions.
Focus: Speed up play and develop quick decision-making in tight spaces while maintaining the technical quality of passes and control.
