Instructions/Setup:
This warm-up practice takes place in a 25 x 25-yard area and focuses on players passing when in a 4-3-3 formation. There are 10 players taking part in this practice, with each following their pass to the next station.
To begin, our left centre-back plays the ball to our defensive midfielder, who passes it back to the right centre-back. The pass is then played wide to our right fullback, who plays a one-two with our central midfielder before playing it forward for our right winger. After the square pass, this pattern is then repeated on the opposite side.
Coaching Notes:
• Passing accuracy and timing – Emphasize accurate and timely passing to ensure the ball is played into the right space for the next player to move into. Players should aim for crisp, controlled passes.
• Movement off the ball – Players must move quickly to receive the ball and anticipate the next pass. Encourage them to stay mobile and support their teammates by always offering a passing option.
• Supporting angles – Ensure that players create supporting angles to facilitate easy passes. Players should position themselves at angles that give the passer multiple options, keeping the play flowing smoothly.
• Composure under pressure – Encourage players to stay composed and control their touches, even if defenders are closing in. Good first touches and quick decision-making will help maintain possession and flow.
Progression 1: Add Pressure
Introduce a defender into the drill to press the player in possession as they receive the ball. This will encourage quicker decision-making and passing under pressure.
Focus: Improve passing under pressure and the ability to create space to receive the ball.
Progression 2: Increase the Speed
Increase the tempo of the passing sequence to simulate match conditions. Players should aim to complete the pattern as quickly as possible while maintaining accuracy.
Focus: Enhance passing speed, movement, and decision-making in a high-intensity situation.
