Instructions/Setup:

This small-sided passing practice is designed to improve players' ability to time their movements when receiving between the lines. The drill is set up in a 25 by 20-yard area where players will pass the ball and focus on breaking through the defensive lines.

The exercise focuses on improving the fluidity of passing sequences, with emphasis on quick, decisive movement and ball speed. The players must ensure their body positioning is optimal when receiving, aiming to break the defensive pressure and deliver precise passes.

Coaching Notes:

• Timing of movement to receive between the lines – Players must anticipate the ball and time their movements to stay ahead of defenders. The goal is to receive the ball in space, away from pressure.

• Increased ball speed when breaking lines – When passing between the lines, encourage players to play the ball with greater speed and precision to avoid interception and maintain fluidity in the attack.

• Verbal and non-verbal communication in sequence – Players should use both verbal calls and body language to communicate their intentions, ensuring the ball is received at the right moment.

• Passing weight and accuracy – Emphasize the importance of accurate passing with the correct weight to make sure the ball is delivered effectively for the receiver to control and advance play.

Progression 1:

To add a layer of complexity, introduce a defender who attempts to intercept the ball. The attacking team must now work together to create space and pass with even greater accuracy and speed.

Focus: Improve decision-making under pressure and increase passing speed to break lines.

Progression 2:

Introduce a time limit, such as 10 seconds to complete a pass between the lines, to simulate a faster-paced environment. Players must think quickly and play faster, focusing on quick combinations.

Focus: Enhance the speed of play and improve reaction times.
