Instructions/Setup:
This technical practice takes place in a 15 by 15-yard area and focuses on developing players' passing, receiving, and movement. The setup includes three outside players and one player in the central area.
To begin, the player in the middle cone plays a pass to the central player, who takes a touch in the direction of their next pass. They then pass the ball to one of the wide players and move toward that station. The outside receiving player takes a touch and passes the ball across to the individual on the opposite side before moving into the central area themselves.
The sequence continues with players choosing the direction of their next pass. The player on the first cone will stay stationary throughout the drill, but they can switch out with another player after a set period of time.
Coaching Notes:
• Passing accuracy and timing – Ensure that players focus on making accurate passes with the correct timing to maintain the flow of the drill. Precision is key for both the passing and receiving players.
• Movement off the ball – Encourage players to move quickly and effectively after making their pass. This helps create new passing angles and allows for better support from teammates.
• Touch and direction – Players should focus on taking a good first touch and directing the ball towards their next pass, ensuring the ball is played in the direction they want it to go with minimal additional touches.
• Speed of play – Emphasize the importance of quick decision-making. Players should think ahead and choose their next pass while still maintaining control and accuracy.
Progression 1: Increase the Number of Passes
To make the drill more challenging, increase the number of passes before switching roles or transitioning. For example, require each team to complete 5 passes before moving the ball to the next player.
Focus: Encourage players to maintain quick, accurate passing and fluid movement while working on maintaining possession and rhythm.
Progression 2: Add a Defender
Introduce a defender in the central area who presses the player with the ball. The attacking players will need to move quickly, create space, and pass with precision to avoid losing possession.
Focus: Improve players' ability to make decisions under pressure and work on maintaining possession when facing opposition.
