Instructions/Setup:

This Counter Attacking practice takes place in a 30 x 30-yard area, with an additional 15 x 15-yard area at the top for players to maintain possession. There are 3 goals: 1 main goal guarded by a goalkeeper and 2 mini-goals for players to score into.

In this setup, the possession team has a floating player that can be used to quickly bounce the ball and break the defensive lines. The attacking team's objective is to complete 10 consecutive passes before they can play through the floater and attack to score. The defenders' objective is to win possession and pass to the striker to break out in a 2v1 situation, combining to score.

Coaching Notes:

• Quick, precise passing – Encourage quick and sharp passing to retain possession and progress the ball forward. Players should look to create passing lanes, communicate effectively, and use the floater to switch the play rapidly.

• Movement off the ball – Players need to move dynamically off the ball to provide options for the player in possession. Off-the-ball runs should aim to pull defenders out of position, facilitating passing opportunities.

• Defensive pressure and anticipation – Defenders should work on anticipating passes, applying high pressure, and closing down passing lanes quickly. They must win the ball back and transition into attack efficiently.

• Counter attack transitions – Focus on the speed of transition when possession is won. Players should quickly switch from defense to attack, using the floater to release the ball and exploit the 2v1 situation in the final third.

Progression 1: Increase Passes Before Transition

Increase the number of consecutive passes required (e.g., 15 passes) before breaking out via the floater. This will encourage more patient play and emphasize maintaining possession longer before looking for a quick counter.

Focus: Improve patience in possession, as well as the speed of transitioning from defense to attack.

Progression 2: Add Extra Defenders

Introduce an additional defender or a second floater for the attacking team, creating more defensive pressure in the transition phase. This will encourage the players to focus on their decision-making, combining quickly, and breaking down the defense in tight spaces.

Focus: Develop decision-making in high-pressure situations and the ability to play through compact defensive lines.
