Instructions/Setup:

This practice takes place in a 40 by 40-yard area and develops players' finishing ability when 1v1 with the goalkeeper and from crosses into the box. Players will work together in pairs throughout the practice.

The area is set up with a goal at each end and multiple mannequins placed around the field to simulate defenders. The focus is on quick passing combinations followed by a finish, either from a 1v1 situation or a cross delivered into the box.

To begin, two players will work together, passing and moving around the mannequins. One player will receive the ball and pass to their partner, then move into the box to receive a return pass. The partner will deliver the ball into the box, and the receiving player will finish 1v1 with the goalkeeper or by converting a cross into the box.

After each sequence, the players will switch roles and repeat the practice, working on both combinations and finishing techniques.

Coaching Notes:

• Quick, precise passing – Focus on maintaining sharp and accurate passes during combinations to ensure the ball is moved efficiently around the field. Players should look to pass the ball with purpose and timing.

• Timing of the run – Encourage players to time their runs well, especially when moving into the box to receive the ball. The run should be timed with the pass to create a clear opportunity for the finish.

• Finishing techniques – Stress the importance of composure when finishing, whether it's in a 1v1 situation with the goalkeeper or from a cross into the box. Players should focus on placing the ball accurately rather than blasting it.

• Movement off the ball – Players should focus on moving into space to create passing lanes and receiving angles. This will help the attacking team break down the defense and get more scoring opportunities.

Progression 1: Add a Defender

Introduce a defender into the practice, either as a passive defender (just tracking the runner) or an active defender, who will try to block the shot or disrupt the passing combinations.

Focus: Improve players' decision-making under pressure and their ability to finish while under defensive pressure or when the angle is closed down.

Progression 2: Cross from Different Angles

Vary the type of crosses by having the ball delivered from different angles and distances. Players should be encouraged to adjust their movement depending on the type of cross (e.g., driven or lofted).

Focus: Improve the players’ ability to adjust their positioning based on the type of cross and focus on finishing with both feet.
