Instructions/Setup:
This drill focuses on quick transitions and counter-attacking in tight situations. Play starts with an attacker dribbling towards two defenders, triggering a 3v2 counter attack. The attacking players must work quickly and efficiently to attempt to score within a 7-second time period, emphasizing speed, decision-making, and accuracy.
If the defenders win possession, they must immediately pass the ball across the grid to the other two defenders. These defenders will then combine and attempt to score in the opposite direction. The practice alternates starting positions, so the two defenders will rotate and take turns defending on both sides of the grid, ensuring a varied defensive challenge.
Coaching Notes:
• Quick Transition: Emphasize the importance of speed when transitioning from defense to attack. Players should move quickly to exploit space and attack the goal within the 7-second window. Timing is crucial for maintaining an advantage during counter-attacks.
• Efficient Passing and Movement: Encourage attacking players to move off the ball and offer quick, accurate passes to break down the defense. Players should look for opportunities to switch the ball across the grid or find space to shoot quickly.
• Defensive Positioning: Defenders must work together to block passing lanes, pressuring the attacking players to force mistakes. They should always stay compact and anticipate the attackers’ movements, ensuring they don’t allow a quick goal.
• Communication: Constant verbal and non-verbal communication is key, especially for defenders. Encourage players to talk and give direction to each other, ensuring they stay organized and respond quickly to any changes in the attack.
Progression 1: Add a Touch Limit for Attackers:
Limit the attacking players to two or three touches each to speed up the attack and force quicker decision-making. This progression promotes faster movement and execution under pressure.
Focus: Increases the tempo of the counter-attack, helping players make quicker decisions and execute plays with urgency.
