Instructions/Setup:
This passing practice focuses on improving passing accuracy, support, and movement within a grid. Players are divided into pairs and placed in their own quadrant within a square. The objective is to progress the ball by connecting passes from one corner of the grid to the other, ensuring effective movement and support between teammates.
In this drill, players will work on both short and long-range passing, while maintaining good angles of support and making sure each pass is weighted properly. The drill encourages players to work together, rotate positions, and create fluid passing sequences to move the ball efficiently across the field.
Coaching Notes:
• Encourage players to create good supporting angles – Players should always look for angles that allow them to receive the ball comfortably and help move the ball forward efficiently.
• Focus on passing accuracy and timing – Passing needs to be crisp, accurate, and on time, with players aiming to break the pressure by maintaining fast and accurate passing sequences.
• Proper communication between players – Verbal and non-verbal communication is key to understanding when to pass and when to move to support their teammates.
• Focus on movement after passing – After playing their pass, players should immediately move to support the next pass. This movement creates dynamic play and helps maintain possession.
Progression 1:
Introduce a defender into the practice to apply pressure. The defenders should challenge the players by attempting to intercept or block passes, forcing the attackers to use better timing, passing accuracy, and decision-making under pressure.
Focus: Improve the ability to maintain possession while under pressure.
Progression 2:
Add a time limit for completing a set number of passes (e.g., 10 passes in 30 seconds). This forces players to play faster and be more decisive in their passing and movement.
Focus: Increase the speed of play and decision-making under time constraints.
