Practice Breakdown:

Number of Players: 8 | Pitch size: 40x50

  • Play starts with a pass across the grid to an attacker who can take their first touch either up or down toward one of the two main goals. The defender who played the initial pass immediately sprints to apply pressure on the attacker, aiming to disrupt their rhythm and decision-making. This simulates realistic game pressure and challenges the attacker’s composure and ball control under defensive pressure.

Inside both the top and bottom zones, a teammate of the attacker is positioned to receive a quick 1-2 combination pass. The attacker must execute this one-two link effectively before finishing by scoring in the respective main goal. This drill encourages sharp passing, quick movement, and precise finishing, while the defender works on closing down space rapidly and timing their pressure to force mistakes.

  • • Encourage attackers to use their first touch to create space and control direction – This allows better execution of the 1-2 combination under intense pressure from defenders.

    • Stress defenders must sprint quickly to apply immediate pressure – Timely closing down reduces attacker’s options and forces hurried, less effective decisions.

    • Promote quick, accurate 1-2 passing between attacker and teammate – Sharp, well-timed combinations open critical scoring opportunities despite tight defensive attention.

    • Emphasise composure and precision when finishing – Attackers must stay calm and strike accurately despite aggressive pressure from the defender closing in.

  • Limit attackers to two touches during the 1-2 combination

This forces quicker decision-making and sharper execution in tight spaces.

Focus: Develops technical precision, speed of play, and ability to perform under realistic pressure.

  • Add a second defender to increase pressure during the finishing phase

The additional defender creates a more challenging environment, encouraging attackers to improve their awareness, movement, and composure.

Focus: Builds mental toughness, spatial awareness, and improves finishing skills under intense defensive pressure.
