Stockholm Finishing Under Pressure 2.0

Practice Breakdown:
Number of Players: 5 | Pitch size: 1/3 Pitch
In this finishing under pressure drill, play begins with a horizontal pass into a server or coach positioned centrally. The coach then plays a first-time pass through two mannequins to simulate a defensive line, with the attacker timing their run to break onto the ball and finish on goal.
A defender starts five yards behind the attacker and can chase immediately once the pass is made, applying pressure from behind. This forces the attacker to finish under realistic pressure while maintaining control, composure, and technique in front of goal.
• Focus on the attacker’s timing of the run – They must remain onside, explode through the mannequins, and meet the ball with good body shape and momentum.
• Emphasise composed finishing under pressure – Attackers should stay calm, choose the right surface to strike with, and keep their head over the ball when shooting.
• Defender must apply intelligent pressure from behind – Sprinting recovery, using body contact legally, and forcing the attacker onto their weaker side are key principles.
• Highlight the quality of the coach’s pass – It must split the mannequins cleanly, replicate game-realistic tempo, and arrive at the correct angle and speed for the attacker.
Add a second defender recovering from a different angle
Introduce another defender starting 8–10 yards wide, creating pressure from a diagonal line. This adds complexity and forces attackers to make quicker decisions under layered defensive stress.
Focus: Encourages attackers to scan and adapt quickly, promoting sharper movement and varied finishing techniques under changing angles of pressure.
Vary service to create unpredictability
Allow the coach to vary the weight, angle, or timing of the through pass. Some passes should force the attacker to adjust body shape, take a touch, or strike first-time from awkward positions.
Focus: Improves striker adaptability, reinforces body positioning, and demands cleaner finishing from different setups under high pressure.
