Instructions/Setup:
This practice takes place in a 35 by 40-yard area and focuses on developing final third combinations to get in behind and finish. The drill is designed to improve passing, movement, and decision-making in the attacking third. Players will work on quick combinations to break down defenses and create goal-scoring opportunities.
The setup involves three players starting on mannequins, while four players start at the cones with balls. The practice begins with player A playing a 1-2 combination with the central midfielder before passing the ball inside to the attacking midfielder. The attacking midfielder then sets the ball back to the midfielder, who plays a through pass to the striker. The striker then sets the ball for the attacking midfielder to finish on one or two touches.
Coaching Notes:
• Focus on quick, sharp combinations – Ensure that players move the ball quickly through the different phases, using one and two-touch passes to keep the tempo high and maintain momentum.
• Timing of runs and movements – Players must time their runs effectively, especially the attacking midfielder and striker, to stay onside and receive the ball in dangerous positions.
• Passing accuracy and weight – Emphasize passing accuracy, especially on through balls and set passes, ensuring that the ball reaches the intended target with the correct weight and pace.
• Communication between players – Players should communicate clearly during the drill, whether verbally or non-verbally, to signal their intentions and make sure all runs and passes are executed properly.
• Decision-making in the final third – Players need to make quick decisions when in the final third, whether it's choosing when to pass, shoot, or lay off the ball for a teammate.
• Follow the pass to support the play – After playing the ball, players should immediately follow their pass, positioning themselves for the next phase of the attack, either to support or finish.
Progression 1: Add a Defender
Introduce a passive defender who can attempt to intercept passes or pressure players. This will force attackers to adjust their movements and passing accuracy while under defensive pressure.
Focus: Improve decision-making and passing accuracy under pressure, as well as creating space for finishing opportunities.
Progression 2: Third Man Run
The central midfielder now makes a third-man run to get into the box and finish. This forces the attacking team to incorporate off-the-ball movement and adds another attacking option.
Focus: Enhance off-the-ball movement, timing of runs, and ability to finish from different angles.
