40x45
Instructions/Setup:
This practice takes place in a 40 by 45-yard area and focuses on developing central third-man runs to finish. The practice involves players making runs into the central areas to receive passes and create goal-scoring opportunities.
Coaching Notes:
• Timing of the third-man run – Ensure players time their runs to receive the ball at the right moment, avoiding early or late movements that could disrupt the flow of the attack.
• Movement off the ball – Players should make intelligent, well-timed runs into the central area, creating space for themselves and their teammates.
• Passing accuracy – Focus on accurate, well-weighted passes from the first two players in the combination to set up the third-man run.
• Finishing – Once the third man receives the pass, emphasize quick, composed finishing techniques, ensuring the ball is placed in a dangerous area of the goal.
Progression 1: Add Defender Pressure
Introduce a defender who will attempt to block the third-man run or challenge the player receiving the pass. This increases the intensity and requires players to be more precise with their movements and passes.
Focus: Improve the execution of third-man runs under pressure, focusing on timing, awareness, and composure in finishing.
Progression 2: Combination Play with Width
Allow the attacking team to use the width of the field, requiring the central players to make runs after receiving passes from wide areas. This expands the range of third-man runs and encourages quick, dynamic combinations.
Focus: Develop players' ability to create and exploit space by using the entire pitch, particularly in the central areas, for third-man runs and finishes.
