Week 15 Movement in Diamond Formation

Instructions/Setup:

This practice focuses on players' awareness and movement in a diamond formation during technical passing. Set up a diamond shape with four players positioned in each corner of the formation. The central player will be responsible for receiving and distributing the ball, while the other players will focus on creating passing options and moving dynamically to support the ball carrier. Players should practice passing and moving to maintain fluidity and positional awareness.

Coaching Notes:

• Movement to create angles – Players should always be aware of their positioning in relation to the ball and move to create passing lanes for the player in possession.

• Support play – Encourage players to offer support by positioning themselves in the correct areas of the diamond to receive passes and quickly transition play.

• Passing accuracy and timing – Players must focus on the accuracy and timing of their passes, ensuring they are played to the right teammate at the right moment to maintain the flow of play.

• Awareness and decision-making – Players need to constantly scan the field and make quick decisions on where to move next, adjusting their position based on the movements of teammates and the ball.

Progression 1: Introduce Pressure

Add a passive defender to apply pressure on the player with the ball, forcing quicker decision-making and encouraging players to move with purpose.

Focus: Improve decision-making and passing accuracy under pressure, while maintaining the movement and structure of the diamond.

Progression 2: Switch Roles and Expand the Diamond

Allow players to switch positions within the diamond and expand the size of the formation to increase the complexity and intensity of the practice.

Focus: Enhance players’ versatility in the diamond formation and their ability to adapt to different spaces and movements.
