Instructions/Setup:
This practice takes place in a 15 by 20-yard area and focuses on developing players' movement and body shape to receive in the central area. Players are positioned around the central area, and the practice involves passing the ball to each other while focusing on effective movement to create angles to receive. The key objective is for players to receive with proper body shape, allowing them to switch the play quickly and efficiently. The practice can include a passive defender to simulate pressure and improve decision-making.
Coaching Notes:
• Body shape – Emphasize the importance of having the correct body shape when receiving the ball, allowing players to quickly assess the next move and maintain possession.
• Movement off the ball – Players should constantly move to create angles for their teammates, making themselves available to receive passes in different situations.
• Quick switches – Encourage players to look for opportunities to switch the play, utilizing the space and shifting the ball to different areas of the field.
• Awareness – Players need to scan the field before receiving the ball, ensuring they are aware of where the pressure is coming from and where their teammates are positioned.
Progression 1: Introduce Passive Pressure
Add a passive defender to apply light pressure on the player receiving the ball, encouraging quicker movement and decision-making.
Focus: Improve the speed of play and decision-making under pressure, ensuring players stay composed when switching play.
Progression 2: Increase the Size of the Area
Expand the practice area slightly, forcing players to cover more ground and incorporate more movement as they switch the play.
Focus: Enhance players' ability to use space and move dynamically to receive and switch the play in larger areas.
