Instructions/Setup:
This practice focuses on developing technical passing and movement to receive, which are fundamental to maintaining possession in build-up play. The practice takes place in a 20 by 25-yard area with two balls running at the same time. Players work in small groups or pairs, making short, precise passes while constantly moving to offer support and receive the ball. The use of two balls ensures that players maintain focus and get more touches, helping them improve their passing and decision-making under pressure.
Coaching Notes:
• Passing accuracy – Emphasize the need for clean, sharp passes to ensure the ball is delivered to the right area for teammates to receive.
• Movement to receive – Players should always move into space, ensuring they are ready to receive the ball with an open body position to control it easily.
• Quick decision-making – Encourage players to decide quickly whether to pass, dribble, or hold possession, based on the positioning of teammates and opposition.
• Focus – Players should stay engaged and focus on the rhythm of the drill, ensuring they are constantly moving, scanning for options, and maintaining the flow of play.
Progression 1: Add a Defender
Introduce a defender who pressures the player receiving the pass, forcing quicker decisions and improving the players' ability to maintain possession under pressure.
Focus: Improve passing and decision-making under defensive pressure, ensuring that players remain calm and composed.
Progression 2: Increase the Distance Between Players
Increase the distance between players, requiring longer passes and more precise movement to maintain effective combinations.
Focus: Develop players' ability to make accurate, longer-range passes and support each other over greater distances.
