Instructions/Setup:
This functional practice is set up in a 35 by 45-yard area and focuses on developing players' ability to make penetrative passes and improve decision-making when in possession. The setup involves various passing patterns and scenarios that encourage players to look for forward passes, break defensive lines, and decide when to play direct balls or maintain possession.
Coaching Notes:
• Passing range – Focus on developing the players' ability to execute both short and long passes, aiming for accuracy and precision.
• Decision-making under pressure – Encourage players to identify when it's the right time to play a penetrating pass and when it's better to retain possession.
• Movement off the ball – Players must make themselves available for passes, offering options for the player in possession, particularly in the final third.
• Timing of the pass – Work on making the right pass at the right moment, with emphasis on timing and weight to split defensive lines effectively.
Progression 1: Add Defensive Pressure
Introduce defenders in the final third or throughout the field to pressure the attacking players, forcing quicker decision-making and improving passing under pressure.
Focus: Improve passing accuracy under pressure and develop the ability to break through defensive lines more effectively.
Progression 2: Limit Touches
Reduce the number of touches players are allowed to take, forcing them to make quicker decisions and work on the speed of their passing.
Focus: Improve quick decision-making and encourage players to pass the ball with speed and accuracy.
