Week 18 Passing Combinations & Finishing

Instructions/Setup:

This practice takes place in a 20 by 25-yard area and focuses on developing passing combinations to help the center-backs move into advanced areas. Set up the field with cones to mark passing lanes and zones where players will work on combinations to progress the ball, involving the center-backs in offensive situations. Players will pass the ball around, looking for opportunities to play combinations that allow the center-backs to advance and create finishing opportunities.

Coaching Notes:

• Passing accuracy – Ensure all passes, especially to the center-backs, are accurate and well-weighted to allow fluid movement into advanced areas.

• Communication – Encourage constant communication between players, especially when passing to the center-backs, to ensure smooth transitions into attacking spaces.

• Awareness of movement – Players should anticipate the center-backs’ runs into advanced positions and support them with well-timed passes.

• Decision-making – Focus on when to pass to the center-backs and how to incorporate them into the attacking play without rushing the attack or losing possession.

Progression 1: Include Defensive Pressure

Introduce passive defenders to create pressure on the ball, forcing the center-backs to make quicker decisions when advancing and combining with teammates.

Focus: Improve timing and decision-making under pressure, and encourage center-backs to find space in advanced areas.

Progression 2: Finish After Combination

After successfully combining with the center-backs, finish the sequence with a shot on goal or a cross into the box, making sure to focus on accuracy and composure in the final third.

Focus: Emphasize finishing after a well-executed passing combination, ensuring players finish the attacking moves effectively.
