Week 19 Defending as Pair 5v2 Rondo

Instructions/Setup:

This practice takes place in a 15 by 25-yard area with a 5v2 rondo setup. The focus is on developing defending as a pair and decision-making in possession. Two defenders work together to prevent the five attackers from keeping possession of the ball, focusing on communication, positioning, and teamwork. The defenders must work in sync to close passing lanes and win the ball back efficiently.

Coaching Notes:

• Defensive positioning – Defenders should maintain good positioning to block passing lanes and limit the options for the attackers.

• Communication – Constant verbal and non-verbal communication between the defenders is crucial to ensure they are working together effectively and covering the right areas.

• Pressure and cover – One defender applies pressure to the player in possession, while the other provides cover to ensure they are always in a supportive position to regain possession.

• Decision-making – Defenders need to make quick decisions on when to apply pressure and when to stay compact to limit the space for attackers.

Progression 1: Increase Intensity

Add a third defender to increase the pressure on the attackers and force the defenders to adjust their positioning, working to regain possession with more intensity.

Focus: Encourage defenders to adapt to different attacking patterns and remain organized under increased pressure.

Progression 2: Attackers Can Switch Sides

Allow attackers to switch positions, requiring defenders to adjust their positioning and communication, ensuring they stay compact and continue to work as a pair.

Focus: Improve defenders' ability to adapt quickly to changing situations while maintaining their defensive shape.
