Instructions/Setup:
This simple technical practice focuses specifically on our wingers and developing their ability to dribble, take directional first touches, and drive in possession. The setup involves a 10 by 10-yard area with poles and cones arranged in a circuit. Players will dribble through the poles, working on controlling the ball and changing direction quickly with their first touch. The objective is to improve the wingers' ability to drive forward with the ball while maintaining close control and preparing for a quick attack.
Coaching Notes:
• Ball control – Focus on keeping the ball close while dribbling, using quick touches to maintain control in tight spaces.
• Directional first touch – Encourage wingers to use their first touch to change direction quickly, setting them up for their next move or to accelerate away from defenders.
• Quick decision-making – Players should decide quickly whether to dribble forward or cut inside, ensuring they maintain the tempo and momentum of the attack.
• Confidence in possession – Wingers should be confident to take players on 1v1 and drive forward, using their speed and ball control to create attacking opportunities.
Progression 1: Add a Defender
Introduce a passive defender to apply light pressure. This will help the winger work on beating an opponent and maintaining control in a more game-like situation.
Focus: Improve dribbling under light pressure and making quick decisions when faced with a defender.
Progression 2: Increase Speed of Play
Have players dribble through the circuit at a higher speed, encouraging them to increase their pace and make quicker decisions under more pressure.
Focus: Enhance speed and explosiveness in dribbling, and improve the ability to drive the ball forward with urgency.
