Week 21 Finishing in the Box

Instructions/Setup:

This finishing practice takes place inside the penalty box, focusing on developing players’ ability to shoot with both feet. Players must come short to receive the ball and work on their ability to turn quickly on one touch before finishing. The drill is designed to simulate real-game scenarios where quick, precise finishes are required. The coach will play the ball to each player, who must control it, turn, and take a shot on goal. Players will alternate between shooting with their dominant and non-dominant foot, ensuring they improve their versatility in front of goal.

Coaching Notes:

• Quick first touch – The first touch must be quick and controlled, allowing players to set themselves up for a quick turn and shot on goal.

• Use both feet – Players should focus on shooting with both feet to improve their ability to finish from different angles and situations.

• Body positioning – Ensure the player’s body is balanced to execute a clean strike, using the proper technique for both feet.

• Decision-making – Encourage players to decide whether to shoot early or take a touch depending on the positioning of the goalkeeper and defenders.

Progression 1: Add Defender

Introduce a defender to put pressure on the player as they receive the ball and attempt to turn. The striker must react quickly and shoot before the defender can block the shot.

Focus: Develop the ability to finish under pressure, working on quick decision-making and executing shots under tight conditions.

Progression 2: Shooting from Cross

Play crosses into the box from different angles, and players must time their runs to finish with both feet from a variety of delivery types (low, high, driven).

Focus: Improve the ability to finish from crosses with both feet, enhancing positioning and timing when attacking the ball from wide areas.
