Instructions/Setup:
This steady practice is designed as a warm-up or recovery session and takes place in a 15 by 20-yard area. It focuses on incorporating various movements with simple side-foot finishes and rotations. Players will work through a series of movement drills that engage both the upper and lower body, ensuring they stay light on their feet. After completing the movement phase, they will receive the ball and practice side-foot finishing, focusing on technique and accuracy. The practice involves rotations to keep players engaged while maintaining a steady pace.
Coaching Notes:
• Side-foot technique – Emphasize using the inside of the foot for clean, controlled finishes, keeping shots low and on target.
• Movement quality – Focus on smooth, controlled movements as players work through different rotations, ensuring they stay balanced and agile.
• Timing of runs – Encourage players to time their runs well to meet the ball at the right moment for an effective side-foot finish.
• Composure – Stress the importance of staying calm when finishing, especially during recovery sessions, ensuring players are precise with their shots.
Progression 1: Increase Intensity
Gradually increase the pace of the movements and the finishing actions, challenging players to execute quicker side-foot finishes while maintaining control.
Focus: Develop the ability to finish under slightly higher intensity, without losing technique or composure.
Progression 2: Add a Passive Defender
Introduce a passive defender to close down the player before they take their finish. This simulates game-like pressure while still maintaining a controlled environment for recovery.
Focus: Improve finishing under light pressure while focusing on technique and composure.
