Instructions/Setup:
This technical practice takes place in a 40 by 45-yard area and focuses on developing passing combinations and movement in behind to create finishing opportunities. Set up with two wide channels and a central zone, using mannequins or cones to represent defenders. Players work on combining in midfield before making timed runs beyond the last line to receive a through ball and finish. Emphasis is placed on the timing of the forward run, the weight of the through pass, and the quality of the finish.
Coaching Notes:
• Timing of forward runs – Ensure players are making their runs at the right moment to stay onside and get behind the defensive line.
• Weight and angle of pass – Focus on playing through balls with the correct pace and angle to allow the runner to finish in stride.
• Body shape to receive – Encourage players to open up their body when receiving the ball to quickly transition into a finish.
• End product – Emphasize the importance of clinical finishing, encouraging players to pick their spot and stay composed.
Progression 1: Add Passive Defender on Through Ball
Introduce a passive defender tracking the run to force more precise movement and passing.
Focus: Improve timing, accuracy, and decision-making under slight defensive pressure.
Progression 2: Live 2v2 + Support
Create a 2v2 situation in the central area with an additional support player to combine with before making the run in behind.
Focus: Develop combination play under pressure and realistic movement patterns in the final third.
