Instructions/Setup:
This technical combination practice is designed to develop players' ability to combine using one and two touches. Set up a 25 by 25-yard area and divide the space for midfield players or defenders. Players work in small groups or pairs to focus on quick combinations. Emphasize short, sharp passes to maintain the flow of the game, and ensure players move to receive passes and quickly return them. The practice is aimed at improving players’ passing accuracy, touch control, and their understanding of how to combine under pressure.
Coaching Notes:
• Passing speed – Encourage players to pass the ball quickly and accurately, focusing on keeping the tempo of the practice high. Players should avoid taking extra touches, ensuring quick transitions from one player to another.
• Movement off the ball – Players should make purposeful runs to offer passing options. Emphasize the importance of moving into space, providing angles for the passer to make the connection easier.
• One or two touches – Focus on the ability to use one or two touches efficiently. Players should decide quickly when to pass with one touch and when to control the ball with two to maintain possession and flow.
• Decision-making under pressure – Encourage players to make quick decisions on when to release the ball. Decision-making should be fast and accurate to ensure smooth combinations, especially when working under pressure.
Progression 1: Add a Defender
Introduce one defender to apply pressure to the player receiving the ball, forcing them to make quicker decisions and execute the combinations faster. This will help simulate real-game scenarios where players have less time to make decisions.
Focus: Improve the accuracy and speed of passing while under pressure from a defender, enhancing players’ ability to retain possession in tight spaces.
Progression 2: Add More Defenders
Introduce two or more defenders to the drill. This will challenge the players to increase the complexity of their combinations to break through a more organized defense. Players must be aware of defenders' positions and adjust their passes accordingly.
Focus: Develop the players’ ability to use multiple combinations to break down a stronger defensive setup, encouraging more advanced passing techniques and teamwork.
