Instructions/Setup:
This technical practice focuses on deliberate movement and combination play to encourage runs towards and away from the ball. Set up a 30 by 30-yard area with two teams or groups of players. The objective is for players to work together using short, sharp passing combinations while making runs to create space for forward progression. Emphasize accurate passing, timing of runs, and decision-making to move the ball quickly and create goal-scoring opportunities. Players should focus on timing their movements to create space for effective passes and shots on goal.
Coaching Notes:
• Passing accuracy and speed – Players should focus on passing with accuracy and speed, ensuring the ball is delivered to the intended teammate without hesitation. Emphasize the need to pass quickly to maintain the tempo and create space for forward progression.
• Timing of runs – Ensure players make well-timed runs to either offer support to the ball carrier or pull defenders out of position. Players should be aware of when to make runs toward or away from the ball to maintain attacking momentum.
• Movement off the ball – Encourage players to constantly move off the ball to create passing angles and options. They should be proactive, always looking for space and preparing to receive the ball in advanced positions.
• Quick decision-making – Players must make quick decisions on when to pass, when to dribble, and when to shoot. The quicker they can decide and execute, the more effective the combination play will be.
Progression 1: Add a Defender
Introduce one defender to the practice to apply pressure on the attacking players. The defender should challenge players to make quicker passes and runs. The attacking team will need to work harder to maintain possession and create space.
Focus: Develop the ability to make quick decisions and execute accurate passes under pressure from a defender, enhancing attacking play in tight situations.
Progression 2: Increase the Defensive Pressure
Introduce two or more defenders to the drill, forcing players to be more creative and quick with their combinations. The attackers must work harder to break down the defense using movement and passing combinations, requiring better coordination and decision-making.
Focus: Improve teamwork and communication when facing defensive pressure, encouraging more advanced passing combinations and better spatial awareness to break through multiple defenders.
