Instructions/Setup:
This breakout rondo focuses on developing players' ability to make penetrative passes, execute quick combinations, and time their movement in behind to finish. The drill starts with a 4 v 2 rondo, where the attackers aim to maintain possession and break out of the area. The breakout is achieved by either completing 10 successful passes or by splitting the two defenders. Once the breakout is successful, the striker and attacking midfielder combine before a pass is played through to the winger, who makes a run in behind the defense to finish on 1 or 2 touches. Emphasize the importance of accurate passes, good weight on the ball, and precise timing of the attacking movement.
Coaching Notes:
• Penetrative Passing – Encourage players to make quick, sharp passes that break through the defensive lines. Stress the importance of passing with the correct weight and timing, so the ball is played into spaces where the attackers can immediately take advantage.
• Quick Combinations – The key to success in this drill is quick, sharp combinations between the attackers. Ensure that players are making short, well-timed passes, always looking to create angles for the next pass. Encourage off-the-ball movement to support the combination play.
• Timing of Movement in Behind – The winger must time their run perfectly to receive the through ball from the attacking midfielder. Highlight the importance of reading the game and anticipating the pass, as well as the need to accelerate quickly into the space behind the defense.
• Finishing with Accuracy – Focus on finishing with precision, whether it’s a first-time shot or a controlled finish. Remind players to keep their heads up and focus on the goalkeeper’s positioning, aiming to place the ball out of reach of the keeper.
Progression 1: Increase Defensive Pressure
Introduce an additional defender to the rondo, increasing the pressure on the attackers to make quicker decisions and passes. This progression helps players develop their ability to break through more defensive pressure, which simulates match scenarios where space is limited.
Focus: Improve the attackers' decision-making and composure under pressure, enhancing their ability to break down organized defenses.
Progression 2: Add a Goalkeeper and Small Goal
Incorporate a goalkeeper into the drill and set up a small goal for the winger to finish into after receiving the ball in behind. This will simulate a more realistic finishing scenario and increase the intensity of the exercise.
Focus: Develop players' finishing accuracy under match-like conditions, and enhance their ability to quickly convert chances into goals.
