Instructions/Setup:
This technical passing practice is played in a 20 by 20-yard area and focuses on passing combinations between players in a 4-3-3 formation. There are four stations in this sequence, with one player starting at each. The sequence begins with the center-back passing wide to the fullback, who sets the ball for the next player and moves to the next station. The ball is passed through to the central midfielder, who takes a touch and plays it wide to the defensive midfielder. A one-two combination is played between the two midfielders before sprinting through and around a mannequin to restart the sequence.
Coaching Notes:
• Passing Timing and Accuracy – Emphasize the importance of precise timing and accuracy on all passes. The initial pass from the center-back to the fullback should be well-weighted, allowing the fullback to set it up for the next player with minimal adjustments. Players should focus on the accuracy of their passes and the timing of their runs.
• Movement and Positioning – Focus on the movement of players to receive the ball and support the pass. After making their pass, players should move quickly to the next station, ensuring they’re in position to receive the ball and continue the sequence.
• One-Two Combinations – Encourage players to execute the one-two combination quickly and smoothly. The combination between the central midfielder and defensive midfielder should be sharp, with both players anticipating the pass and making the correct movement to support the play.
• Sprint After the Pass – After completing the one-two combination, players should sprint through and around the mannequin. This encourages players to stay dynamic and maintain their intensity throughout the practice, mimicking real match situations where quick recovery runs are crucial.
Progression 1: Add Pressure from Defenders
In this progression, introduce a defender to apply pressure on the central midfielder or the fullback during the passing sequence. This will challenge the players to maintain accuracy and timing under defensive pressure, improving their decision-making and ability to handle opposition in real match situations.
Focus: Improve players' ability to pass and combine effectively under pressure, sharpening their decision-making and composure.
Progression 2: Increase Speed of Play
Reduce the time allowed for each pass and increase the overall tempo of the practice. Players should focus on completing their passes and one-two combinations faster, which will develop their ability to play under high pressure and in fast-paced situations.
Focus: Enhance players' ability to execute quicker combinations and passes, building their speed of play for match situations.
