Instructions/Setup:
This practice focuses on developing players' ability to attack quickly from the midfield third. Begin with three midfielders passing between themselves in a triangle. One of the midfielders will turn out quickly to trigger the attack. The attacking front three will make movements to break into space and receive the ball behind the opposition’s back three. The front three will then look to deliver passes for their teammates to finish. If the defenders win possession, they can break out to score in either of the two mini-goals. Coaches can restart play quickly, with defenders out of position, to trigger a 3 v 2 attacking overload.
Coaching Notes:
• Midfielders' Quick Decision-Making – Encourage the midfielders to make quick, decisive passes within the triangle, and focus on maintaining fluid movement to draw defenders out of position. The player triggering the attack should be aware of the situation and quickly transition to an attacking mindset.
• Attacking Movement – The front three should make coordinated movements to break into space behind the opposition’s back line. Emphasize the importance of timing and anticipation to stay onside while exploiting gaps in the defense. Players should vary their runs to keep defenders guessing and create overload situations.
• Quick Transition from Midfield – The midfielder initiating the attack must quickly assess options and make the correct pass to trigger the forward movement. Speed of thought and play are essential for successful transitions, so players should be encouraged to make quick, decisive decisions to maintain the tempo.
• Defensive Reaction – Defenders should be taught to press immediately upon winning possession and quickly transition to attack. Encourage them to take advantage of the attacking overloads and break out quickly to either of the two mini-goals. Players must understand the importance of a swift response in defensive situations, maintaining pressure and shape.
Progression 1: Limit Midfield Passes
In this progression, limit the number of passes the midfielders can make before triggering the attack. This forces them to make quicker decisions, encouraging faster transitions and simulating match conditions where time and space are limited.
Focus: Improve the speed of transition and decision-making in midfield, forcing players to work with less time to think.
Progression 2: Introduce Defenders in Attack
Introduce an additional defender or two in the final third, increasing the defensive pressure on the attacking overload. This will force the attackers to adapt their movement and passing, improving their ability to create space and finish under pressure.
Focus: Enhance attacking players' ability to work under pressure, improving their composure and finishing in overloaded situations.
