Instructions/Setup:

In this 7v7 possession game, the central playing area is set up for outfield players to maintain possession and look to play through balls for forward runners. The attacking players will then move into a 20-yard end zone to finish against the goalkeeper in a 1 v 1 situation. Mannequins can be positioned across each zone to challenge attacking players to time their runs and passes effectively, making it more difficult to break through. The focus of the practice is on playing precise through balls and timing the attacking runs. To increase the intensity and variation, 1v1 and 2v1 finishing games can be added in the finishing section.

Coaching Notes:

• Through Ball Precision – Emphasize the importance of delivering accurate through balls into the forward run, making sure the pass is weighted correctly to allow the attacker to run onto it. Players should focus on varying the angle of the pass and using both feet to add unpredictability.

• Timing of Runs – Attackers should work on timing their runs to ensure they receive the ball in stride, staying onside and avoiding the defensive pressure. Encourage attackers to read the game and anticipate the pass rather than waiting for it to come to them.

• Finishing under Pressure – The finishing section should be high-intensity, with players working on composure and quick decision-making in 1v1 and 2v1 scenarios against the goalkeeper. Players should practice both finishing with power and placing the ball in the corners to beat the goalkeeper.

• Awareness of Space – Players should be aware of the space around them and work to create and exploit gaps in the defense. Encourage the use of quick passes and effective movement to drag defenders out of position, creating clear channels for through balls.

Progression 1: Introduce Defenders in the End Zone

In this progression, add one or two defenders to the end zone, forcing attackers to beat defenders before finishing on the goalkeeper. This will increase the complexity of the drill, encouraging attackers to make quicker decisions and be more creative with their movements and finishing.

Focus: Improve decision-making and creativity when under pressure from defenders in the final third.

Progression 2: Limit Touches in Possession

Limit the number of touches that outfield players can take in possession, increasing the tempo and encouraging quicker passing and decision-making. This will create more dynamic movements and allow attackers to move forward more quickly, simulating match conditions where time and space are limited.

Focus: Speed up the tempo of play and improve passing accuracy in tight spaces, focusing on quick decision-making and movement.
