Instructions/Setup:
This defensive practice focuses on developing quick recovery runs after a turnover. Players will work on sprinting towards a mannequin, heading the ball back to the coach, and then immediately transitioning to block shots on goal from two mini goals. The drill aims to improve sprint speed, reactions, and defensive awareness in high-intensity scenarios.
Coaching Notes:
• Sprint Speed – Emphasize the importance of quick, explosive sprints to cover ground and prevent attacking players from gaining an advantage.
• Quick Reactions – Encourage defenders to react quickly to changes in the game, especially after a turnover, and focus on maintaining a sharp defensive mindset.
• Timing the Header – Ensure players focus on timing the header accurately to maintain possession and set up the next phase of play.
• Shot Blocking – Teach defenders how to position themselves to block shots effectively while maintaining balance and composure.
Progression 1: Add Offensive Pressure
Introduce an attacking player who looks to shoot at the mini goals after the defender makes the header. This adds more pressure and forces defenders to make decisions quickly.
Focus: Improve defenders' ability to react and block shots under pressure.
Progression 2: Increase Distance
Increase the distance between the defender and the mini goals to challenge the defender's sprinting ability and timing in recovery runs.
Focus: Enhance endurance and speed during recovery, ensuring defenders can cover more ground quickly.
