Instructions/Setup:

This possession-focused game is played with six attacking players and three defenders. The attacking team should aim to use the central player to create triangles and maintain possession. The objective is to focus on finding the third man through the central player, utilizing quick, precise passes to break through defensive pressure and retain control of the ball.

Coaching Notes:

• Creating Triangles – Encourage the attacking players to form triangles around the ball, particularly involving the central player. This positioning allows for quick, easy passes and makes it harder for defenders to intercept or break the possession chain.

• Use of the Central Player – The central player plays a crucial role in linking up the attack. Players should be encouraged to look for this player to progress the ball, allowing for third-man runs and creating space for other players to make forward movements.

• Passing Accuracy and Weight – Ensure that passes are well-weighted, with players focusing on maintaining precision while passing under pressure. Encourage players to pass with a purpose, ensuring the ball is directed to the right teammate and at the correct speed.

• Quick Decision-Making – Emphasize the need for quick decision-making in tight situations. Players should assess their options rapidly, choosing the best passing lane to retain possession and continue the build-up play.

Progression 1: Introduce a Time Limit

Add a time constraint for the team in possession, forcing them to make quicker decisions and play at a faster tempo. This will simulate match situations where possession needs to be maintained while looking for a break in defensive lines.

Focus: Improve speed of play and decision-making under time pressure.

Progression 2: Increase Defensive Pressure

Introduce an additional defender to make the possession game more challenging. This progression forces the attacking team to work harder to create space and maintain possession, requiring more accurate passes and quicker movement off the ball.

Focus: Improve composure and passing accuracy under increased defensive pressure.
