Instructions/Setup:
This practice takes place in a 30 by 35-yard area and focuses on developing players' finishing in various attacking situations. Players will work on finishing from different angles, under pressure, and after receiving passes in various positions around the box. The exercise is designed to improve players' ability to make quick decisions in front of goal and to finish with composure in different attacking scenarios.
Coaching Notes:
• Finishing Technique – Encourage players to focus on the technique of their shots, ensuring they strike the ball cleanly and with composure. Whether it's a first-time finish, volley, or one-on-one situation, players should aim for accuracy and control rather than just power.
• Positioning – Emphasize the importance of being in the right position at the right time to receive the ball in dangerous areas. Players should work on their movement off the ball to get into goal-scoring positions and react quickly to loose balls or rebounds.
• Composure Under Pressure – Focus on maintaining composure when finishing, particularly when under pressure from defenders or in tight spaces. Encourage players to stay calm and choose the best option, whether that’s placing the ball in the corner or making a quick decision in a one-on-one situation.
• Awareness and Decision-Making – Players should be aware of the goalkeeper’s position and the defenders’ movements. Encourage them to assess the situation quickly and choose the best finishing option based on the circumstances.
Progression 1: Add Defenders
Introduce passive or active defenders who challenge the attacking players, forcing them to make quicker decisions and adjust their finishing technique to avoid defensive pressure. This will help players improve their finishing under more realistic match conditions.
Focus: Enhance finishing under defensive pressure and improve decision-making in tight situations.
Progression 2: Vary the Service
Change the method of ball delivery (e.g., passes, crosses, rebounds) to replicate different types of attacking situations. This variation forces players to adapt and finish from different angles, improving their overall finishing ability in various match scenarios.
Focus: Improve finishing from a variety of delivery types and angles.
