Instructions/Setup:
This drill focuses on improving a player's ability to receive the ball with their back to goal while under pressure. The practice begins with the attacker entering the box and preparing to receive the ball while being closely marked by a defender. Once the ball is played, the attacker must use their body to shield the defender, turn, and evade the pressure to finish at the goal directly behind them. This drill is great for developing the ability to play under pressure, maintain possession, and quickly transition into a shooting opportunity.
Coaching Notes:
• Receiving with Back to Goal – Emphasize the importance of body positioning when receiving the ball with the back to goal. The player should use their first touch to shield the defender and position themselves for the next move, ensuring they remain balanced and ready to turn.
• Shielding and Protection – Encourage attackers to use their body to shield the ball, protecting it from the defender. Strong, confident body positioning is crucial to maintaining possession and avoiding losing the ball to a tackle.
• Quick Turn and Transition – Focus on the attacker’s ability to quickly turn and change direction once the ball is received. Encourage sharp, decisive movements to escape the defender and quickly transition into a shooting position.
• Composure and Finishing – Stress the importance of maintaining composure when finishing. The attacker should aim for accuracy over power when shooting at the goal, ensuring they place the ball effectively to beat the goalkeeper.
Progression 1: Defender Pressure Increase
Increase the intensity of the defender's pressure, requiring the attacker to use more skill and creativity to evade the defender. This will test the attacker's ability to deal with stronger defensive pressure and improve their decision-making.
Focus: Improve composure, quick decision-making, and ball protection under greater pressure.
Progression 2: Limit Touches
Limit the number of touches the attacker is allowed to take after receiving the ball. This forces quicker decisions and helps develop the attacker’s ability to control and turn the ball swiftly, preparing them for more intense game situations.
Focus: Enhance speed of play and the ability to control and turn quickly in tight spaces.
