Instructions/Setup:
This drill focuses on improving counter-attacking skills, team coordination, and creating numerical advantages. The practice begins with 4 attackers and 4 defenders positioned directly ahead of each other. The coach serves a ball into one of the attackers, initiating a 4v3 situation. As the ball is played, the defender in line with the receiver must immediately make a recovery run around a cone placed ahead of them. The attacking team’s objective is to exploit the 4v3 advantage and score, while the defending team’s goal is to delay the attack until the recovering defender can rebalance the numbers and create a 4v4 scenario.
Coaching Notes:
• Creating Numerical Advantage – Emphasize the importance of exploiting the 4v3 overload by making quick, precise passes and intelligent runs. The attackers should work together to create space and break down the defense, using the advantage to create high-quality scoring chances.
• Quick Transition and Decision Making – Focus on the attackers’ ability to transition quickly from defense to attack. Once the ball is played, attackers must make quick decisions to take advantage of the numerical superiority and look for the most effective passing or shooting options.
• Defensive Delay and Recovery – Instruct defenders to delay the attacking play by positioning themselves to block passing lanes and force the attacking team into less dangerous areas. The recovering defender should focus on regaining position quickly and supporting their teammates in rebalancing the defense.
• Timing of Runs – Encourage attackers to time their runs effectively, moving into space to receive the ball and maintain the numerical advantage. They should be ready to attack quickly and decisively as soon as the ball is played.
Progression 1: Add a Second Recovery Defender
Introduce a second defender who can assist in the recovery process, providing the defensive team with more time to reorganize and create a more difficult situation for the attacking team. This adds a layer of complexity and helps to improve the attackers' ability to deal with tighter defensive situations.
Focus: Develop the ability to adapt to changing situations and finish under pressure.
Progression 2: Increase Time Pressure
Set a time limit for the attacking team to score, increasing the urgency of the play. This encourages quicker transitions, faster decision-making, and more efficient use of the overload situation, improving counter-attacking under time constraints.
Focus: Improve decision-making under pressure and develop the ability to finish quickly during counter-attacks.
