Instructions/Setup:

This build-up practice is designed for pre-match preparation, focusing on building play from the back and creating fluid attacking combinations. Play begins with the goalkeeper and 3 outfield players completing unopposed passing combinations to progress the ball. After a few successful combinations, the goalkeeper plays a long ball into the red midfield. Once the red team gains possession, they transition to an unopposed attacking phase, where they must use quick, fluid combination play to finish the attack.

Coaching Notes:

• Build-Up from the Back – Encourage the goalkeeper and defenders to make accurate and well-timed passes during the unopposed phase. The focus should be on making simple, effective passing combinations to create angles and space to progress the ball forward.

• Timing and Precision – The transition to the red team should be sharp and focused, with precise passes from the goalkeeper. Players should be aware of their positioning to receive the long ball and make the next pass as quickly as possible to keep the rhythm of the play moving.

• Combination Play – Once the red team gains possession, emphasize quick, fluid combination play to break down the opposition. Encourage players to use one-touches and off-the-ball movement to support each other and maintain attacking momentum.

• Finishing the Attack – Ensure that the red team finishes the drill by attacking with purpose. Players should focus on creating and exploiting spaces, making decisive runs, and using accurate, well-weighted passes to set up a clear shot or goal-scoring opportunity.

Progression 1: Add Defensive Pressure

Introduce passive defenders to pressure the red team as they begin their attacking phase. This increases the difficulty and simulates a more realistic scenario where the attackers need to move quickly and create space under defensive pressure.

Focus: Improve decision-making and accuracy in combination play under light defensive pressure.

Progression 2: Time the Attack

Set a time limit for the red team to complete the attack after winning possession from the goalkeeper’s long pass. This pushes the players to move quickly and make faster decisions, simulating game conditions where speed is crucial in the attacking phase.

Focus: Increase the speed of play and decision-making in transition from defense to attack.
