Instructions/Setup:
Play starts with a pass into a central player. The central player must take a first touch through either one of the boxes located to the side of them. After the initial pass is made, the passer must make a recovery run and attempt to stop the attacker from breaking in and out of the box before scoring into the mini goals. This drill focuses on the attacker’s ability to quickly create space and finish, while the defender works on recovery speed and defensive positioning.
Coaching Notes:
• Quick First Touch – The central player should focus on taking a quick first touch into one of the boxes, allowing them to make a strong move in the direction of the mini goal. A controlled touch sets up the attacker for success in breaking the defender’s line.
• Attacker’s Movement – Encourage the attacker to work on quick, agile movements to get into the box and around the defender. They should be aware of their positioning and try to stay unpredictable in their movements.
• Defensive Recovery – The defender must focus on recovering quickly after the initial pass. They should anticipate the attacker’s movements and attempt to get into position to prevent the attacker from entering the box and scoring.
• Finishing Under Pressure – The attacker should be encouraged to finish quickly, with composure, as the defender will be closing down their space. A quick, decisive shot is necessary to avoid being pressured by the recovering defender.
Progression 1: Add a Second Defender
Introduce a second defender to challenge the attacker after they break out of the box. This will force the attacker to be more creative and focus on making quicker decisions.
Focus: Improve the attacker’s ability to break down multiple defenders and make quicker, more effective decisions.
Progression 2: Time the Attacker
Set a time limit (e.g., 10 seconds) for the attacker to enter the box and finish. This will encourage quick, decisive play, helping the attacker improve under time pressure.
Focus: Increase the attacker’s decision-making speed and ability to finish under pressure.
