Instructions/Setup:

This finishing drill allows players to get two different types of finish consecutively. For the first finish, the player must run forwards and take their first touch into the box before finishing while inside. For the second finish, the player will receive the ball inside the box, but their first touch must take them outside of the box. This drill helps players practice both quick finishing inside the box and finishing under pressure after a touch outside the box.

Coaching Notes:

• First Touch Into the Box – The player should focus on taking their first touch into the box with control and speed, setting up a clean strike at goal. The touch should be directed towards the goal to allow for a natural follow-up finish.

• Finishing Technique – Encourage players to use a variety of finishing techniques (instep, side-foot, etc.) based on the type of ball they receive and their angle. They should focus on composure and accuracy, not just power.

• Touch Out of the Box – When receiving the ball inside the box and taking the touch outside, the player must ensure they create enough space between themselves and the defender. This will require the player to control the ball with their feet while maintaining good balance.

• Quick Decision-Making – Players should work on making quick decisions in this drill, deciding in real-time which finishing technique to use based on the positioning of the defender and the angle of the ball.

Progression 1: Add a Defender

Introduce a defender who can apply pressure as the player makes their first touch. The defender can close down the space quickly, forcing the attacker to be quicker with their touch and finish.

Focus: Increase the attacking player’s ability to finish under pressure while maintaining composure.

Progression 2: Vary the Ball Delivery

The coach can serve balls from different angles, forcing the player to adjust their positioning and decision-making with each touch. This will simulate real match scenarios.

Focus: Improve adaptability to different ball deliveries and angles while finishing.
