Instructions/Setup:
Play begins with a pass into a deeper teammate, creating a 2v1 scenario in the attacking phase. Each phase is timed for 7 seconds, promoting fast and fluid attacking play. Once the attacking team has finished their attack, the initial receiver transitions to defend against the opposition’s 2v1. As a progression, you can allow the next 2v1 phase to begin immediately, forcing players to transition more quickly and with greater focus.
Coaching Notes:
• Fast Transitions – Stress the importance of quick transitions from attack to defense. Players should immediately switch from attacking to defending without hesitation, focusing on positioning and communication.
• Timing of Runs – In the attacking phase, encourage players to time their runs and passes quickly, aiming for a decisive and swift attack within the 7-second time limit. The player in possession should look to exploit the space and make the most of their numerical advantage.
• Defending the 2v1 – When transitioning to defense, emphasize proper defensive positioning. The defender should focus on cutting off passing lanes and forcing the attacking player to make decisions under pressure. Quick decision-making is crucial when defending a 2v1.
• Decision-Making Under Pressure – Encourage players to make quick, confident decisions, whether attacking or defending, especially as the drill moves at a fast pace. Players should focus on sharp decision-making within the short 7-second window.
Progression 1: Start Immediately After Transition
Allow the next 2v1 phase to begin immediately after the transition, promoting quicker decision-making and faster transitions.
Focus: Improve reaction speed and adaptability during transitions between attack and defense.
Progression 2: Introduce Extra Defenders
Add another defender to make the 2v1 into a 2v2. This will encourage the attacking team to make quicker, more effective passes to break down the defense.
Focus: Improve offensive decision-making under increased defensive pressure and help players better handle defensive transitions.
