Half Pitch

Instructions/Setup:

The drill starts with the attacker dribbling towards the grid. The attacker can pass to either one of their teammates, who are positioned between two gates. Once one of the attackers between the gates receives the ball, a 2v2 scenario is created. The attacking team will aim to score in the main goal, while the defending team attempts to stop the attack and dribble through the vacant gate on regaining possession.

Coaching Notes:

• Quick Decision-Making – Encourage the attacking players to make quick decisions when receiving the ball, looking for the best option between passing or dribbling into space. Awareness of the teammate's position between the gates is key for effective play.

• Movement Off the Ball – The attacking players should focus on intelligent off-the-ball movement to create space for a pass or better shooting opportunities. Timing runs and creating angles to support the player with the ball is crucial.

• Defensive Pressing – The defending players must focus on applying pressure without overcommitting. They should aim to block passing lanes and force the attacker into less dangerous areas, preventing easy shots on goal.

• Transitioning Quickly – When possession is regained by the defending team, they must transition into attack quickly, aiming to dribble through the vacant gate to score. Emphasize the importance of immediate counter-attacks to catch the attacking team off guard.

Progression 1: Introduce a Time Limit

Introduce a time limit for the attacking team to score. If they do not score within a set period (e.g., 10-15 seconds), the play stops, and the drill restarts with a new set of attackers and defenders.

Focus: Increase the pace of play and improve decision-making under time pressure.

Progression 2: Add More Defenders

Increase the number of defenders to make it a 3v2 situation. This will force the attacking team to be more creative with their passing and movement to break down a more compact defense.

Focus: Improve attacking team’s ability to break down a stronger defensive setup and adapt to numerical disadvantages.
