Instructions/Setup:

Play starts with a pass into the central attacker. This attacker then decides which side the attacking team will play on with their first touch. Once the attacker takes their first touch, the play becomes live in a 3v1 attack. Two defenders will be recovering from the sides, attempting to rebalance the numbers and turn the scenario into a 3v3, aiming to stop the attack.

Coaching Notes:

• First Touch Direction – The central attacker must use their first touch to either commit a defender or create space for themselves and their teammates. The touch should be purposeful and aimed at initiating an attack toward the most advantageous side.

• Speed of Play – The attacking team should focus on moving the ball quickly to exploit the numerical advantage, maintaining fluidity and pace in their passing and movement to break down the defense.

• Recovery Defenders – The two recovering defenders should work in unison to quickly close down space and re-establish numerical equality. They need to be aware of where the ball is at all times, communicating with each other to effectively stop the attack.

• Decision-Making in Attack – The attackers should look to make decisions on the fly, choosing to pass, dribble, or shoot based on the positions of the defenders and their teammates. The attack should focus on using quick combinations to break through defensive lines.

Progression 1: Introduce a Time Limit

Set a time limit (e.g., 15-20 seconds) for the attacking team to score. If they fail to score within the time frame, the defenders win the point and the play restarts.

Focus: Speed up decision-making and increase the urgency of the attacking play.

Progression 2: Add Another Defender

Add a third defender to the scenario, making it a 3v2 for the attacking team. This progression forces the attackers to work harder to break down the defense and improve their ability to create space under pressure.

Focus: Improve attacking team’s ability to break down a more compact defense and work effectively in overloaded situations.
