Instructions/Setup:
This practice focuses on improving players' ability to receive and play forward passes while on the move. Players will start by running into the grid directly ahead of them to receive a pass as they arrive. Upon receiving the ball, the player should take a first touch either to the left or right before playing a diagonal pass forwards to a teammate.
Coaching Notes:
• Receiving on the Move – Players should focus on controlling the ball with the first touch, ensuring they are always moving in the direction of the pass. Encourage players to keep their body open and position themselves to receive the ball while maintaining momentum.
• Quick Direction Change – Once the player has received the ball, they should quickly adjust their body position to either the left or right to create space and prepare for a diagonal pass. The key is to make the touch smooth and efficient.
• Diagonal Passing Technique – When playing the diagonal pass, players should focus on using the inside of their foot to ensure accuracy and proper weight on the ball. The pass should be directed to the player’s movement, not just to the space.
• Communication – Players should be encouraged to communicate with teammates before receiving the ball, ensuring they know where the pass will go and who is making the run.
Progression 1: Increase the Passing Distance
As the players become more comfortable, increase the distance between the player receiving the ball and the player making the pass. This forces players to adjust their technique and control over a longer distance.
Focus: Develop the ability to control the ball under pressure and execute a longer, more precise diagonal pass.
Progression 2: Add Defensive Pressure
Introduce a defender who applies pressure on the player receiving the ball. The attacker now has to receive and pass quickly while dealing with a defender attempting to intercept or block the pass.
Focus: Improve the player’s ability to make quick decisions under pressure, focusing on both receiving and passing with minimal time and space.
