Instructions/Setup:

The objective of this practice is for two players to either retain or progress possession. Each box is set up as a 2v1, with a secondary defender positioned in the central zones.

While playing the 2v1, the two players in possession can combine and retain possession together or progress the ball to the opposite grid. Players should be encouraged to progress play when possible but must also retain possession through passes and dribbles.

Coaching Notes:

• Quick Passing & Movement – Emphasize quick, sharp passing between the two players in possession. Encourage movement off the ball to create space and better passing angles.

• Decisions on Progression – Players should be aware of when to progress the play and when to keep possession. Encourage players to read the game and make quick decisions based on the pressure they face.

• Shielding & Protecting the Ball – The player on the ball should focus on shielding and using their body to protect the ball when under pressure, keeping possession until a safe passing option becomes available.

• Central Defender Awareness – The secondary defender in the central zone must remain alert and anticipate the direction of play. Encourage them to apply pressure without committing too early, forcing the attacking team to make decisions under pressure.

Progression 1: Add a Third Defender

Introduce a third defender to create a 2v2 in the boxes. This will increase the challenge for the attacking players, encouraging them to combine even more effectively to create space and progress the play.

Focus: Improving ball retention under pressure and quick decision-making in tighter spaces.

Progression 2: Limit Touches for the Possession Players

Limit the number of touches allowed for the players in possession to increase the pace of play. This forces quicker decisions and encourages faster ball movement and combination play.

Focus: Speed of play and maintaining possession while under pressure.
