Instructions/Setup:

This 4-phase finishing practice allows a forward to develop their ability to finish on both feet. Two of the finishes come from through balls, where the forward must receive and finish on the half turn. The other two finishes come from cut-back zones.

The forward is limited to 2 touches for each phase to encourage good movement, a positive first touch, and finishing at match speed.

Coaching Notes:

• Positive First Touch – Encourage the forward to take a positive, forward-moving first touch when receiving the ball, setting them up for a quick and decisive finish.

• Finishing with Both Feet – Focus on developing the ability to finish on both feet. The forward should practice finishing from various angles and positions, ensuring they're comfortable shooting with either foot.

• Timing & Movement – Emphasize the importance of timing runs into the box, especially when receiving through balls or anticipating cutbacks. The forward should be aware of their positioning in relation to the defenders and the ball.

• Match Speed – Push the forward to maintain match speed throughout the practice, simulating the pace and intensity of a real game. The quicker the forward can execute the finish, the more effective the training will be.

Progression 1: Add a Defender

Introduce a passive defender who will apply light pressure on the forward as they receive the ball and attempt the finish. This will simulate match situations where the forward is under some pressure when receiving and finishing.

Focus: Improving finishing under pressure and maintaining composure with defenders nearby.

Progression 2: Vary the Ball Delivery

Vary the type of delivery for the through balls and cutbacks. Use a mixture of driven balls, chipped passes, and crosses to challenge the forward’s ability to finish from different types of service.

Focus: Adapting finishing technique based on different ball deliveries.
